Respect for gender identity and sexual diversity in Latin American education unions

This document aims to profile the defence made of the human rights of the LGBTI+ population expressed at Education International's Word Congresses since 1998, the year in which the world federation of education workers' highest authority met in Washington. In July of that year, Education International’s Second World Congress adopted its Resolution on the Protection of the Rights of Lesbian and Gay Education Personnel, so commencing the route of ongoing struggle and respect every four years at the organisation’s world meetings.

This publication includes a brief overview of the history of human rights in Latin America, as well as the resolutions of the World Congress of Education International and other documents related to the rights of sexually diverse people. Additionally, it refers to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the American Convention on Human Rights, jurisprudence and rulings of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and similar documents as the basis for the arguments presented in defense of respect for the sexual orientation and gender identity of people who are part of the educational communities of Latin American countries.

Second edition of the publication from 2021, expanded and updated in 2024.
